Jessica Onan's Visit to Mezze Cafe

Eat Local Challenge Participant: Jessica Onan, Program Director for the Center for Sustainability at Aquinas College

Locally Owned Business: Mezze Cafe

What did you eat? Fritos de Manzana, Gazpacho Andaluz, Hommous Burtuqal, Sorbetto and Coffee

What did you learn? I learned about a great source for locally roasted coffee (Ferris Coffe & Nut Shoppe).  Sections of Mezze's menu are constantly changing with the seasonal availability of food!  It was great to see a business so dedicated to locally grown food.

Taking the Eat Local Challenge...has encouraged me to eat a lot more fruits and vegetables (including some that I've never heard of until now!)

Why did you take the Eat Local Challenge? I tend to eat as many locally produced goods as possible in my day to day life, but typically don't search out those "hard to find" goods.  The Eat Local Challenge has motivated me to take the time to really committ to eating locally, by finding more locally produced goods and eating to the season.

What obstacles have you encountered in taking the Eat Local Challenge? Considering the time of year and my prior focus on eating locally, the Challenge has not been as difficult as I originally thought it would be.  (When winter comes, I'm sure I will change my tune!)  That being said, I have found it difficult to find certain ingredients and products locally, such as butter, salt and oil.  These "secondary" products are typically not found at the farmers market and are often disregarded, but they can be just as important as the meat or the potatoes!
